Arsenal defender David Luiz was sent off during the Gunners’ 2-1 loss to Wolves but it looks like Mikel Arteta is not happy with the decision and the club are now going to challenge the red card.

Football London report: “football.london understands that Arsenal are going to appeal David Luiz’s red card against Wolves.

“If they are successful then Luiz will be available to play Aston Villa on Saturday.”

It looks like the Arsenal manager could get David Luiz back in contention for the Aston Villa game if Mark Clattenburg’s comments are anything to go by.

The former referee has come out to say after the match that the on-field referee got it wrong and there is actually a rule which could help David Luiz escape a suspension.

“David Luiz was incorrectly sent off after giving away a penalty at Wolves — it should have been a yellow card,” Clattenburg wrote for The Mail.

“The Arsenal defender made accidental contact with Willian Jose as he ran clear on goal and that caused the forward to fall. No one can dispute it was a foul and the award of a penalty was the right decision.

“However, a law exists that protects teams from conceding a penalty and losing a player to a red card if a genuine attempt to play the ball has been made.

“Luiz was genuinely trying to get back on terms with Jose and it was an accidental foul.

“This type of incident is accepted as a penalty and yellow card. Referee Craig Pawson and VAR Jon Moss got it wrong.

“The law was meant to see players sent off after conceding a penalty only if they had deliberately fouled an opponent to deny a clear scoring opportunity. Arsenal and Luiz should feel aggrieved.”

If David Luiz is back then it will be a big plus for manager Mikel Arteta but if the red card decision is not overturned then Gabriel will have the chance to come back into the side and start in central defence alongside Rob Holding.
