David Luiz returned from suspension in order to take on Sheffield United in the FA Cup but the defender lasted only 54 minutes as he had to be taken off with an injury to his right knee.

And now the Arsenal manager has revealed that the player is facing a race against time to be fit for the club’s Premier League clash vs Norwich City on Wednesday.

Arteta said in his press conference: “We don’t know. He was in pain the other day when he had to leave the pitch.

“He’s not a player that normally does that, so he was uncomfortable. We assessed him yesterday and he was a bit better, but we don’t know.

“He had a scan this morning as well to see how bad it is and he’s very willing. He wants to play but he’s always like that. We will have to see how he is.”

Pablo Mari and Callum Chambers are both out injured meaning if David Luiz is not fit in time then it could be a bit of a headache for the manager. But, at the same time, we do not think Mikel Arteta will be too worried since Sokratis is available for selection plus the pair of Mustafi and Rob Holding have done more than a decent job in central defence.

The manager was also asked about the possibility of selecting Matteo Guendouzi and Mesut Ozil, both of whom have fallen down the pecking order. And to this, the Spanish boss has a really blunt response.

He added: “I said that everybody that I have in the squad, my job is to get the maximum out of them and to try to help them and support them. And if they are willing, everybody is welcome.

“I always hope that the players want to give their best.”

With Granit Xhaka back to full fitness, Matteo Guendouzi will once again be left out of the starting XI while Mesut Ozil should only be able to find a place on the bench vs the Canaries in midweek.
