Man United are back in the Champions League in midweek when they face Atalanta and Ole will see the return of South American internationals Edinson Cavani and Fred for this game.

United have their backs against the wall after the loss to Leicester City and both these players did not feature in that 4-2 defeat.

Edinson Cavani and Fred returned late from international duty but Solskjaer has made it clear that fatigue will not be an issue and the pair will be available for selection in midweek.

The manager said, as quoted: “Fred played really well, played a great pass in for Neymar, so he would have got lots of confidence from again showing how good a player he is.

“Edinson needed minutes. He lost quite a few weeks at the start of the season and that was important for him, so we should be able to deal without them for this game and they should be back in midweek again.”

Will Edinson Cavani and Fred start against Atalanta?

Whenever Fred’s been available, Ole has used him along with McTominay in a double midfield pivot and this could once again be the arrangement in midweek.

Since McTominay and Fred are neither world-class, Man United need two defensive midfielders to shield the back line and if Ole wants to avoid another setback then Fred is surely starting.

This would mean that Paul Pogba will either be on the bench or get a place on the wings. While this might be a bit hard to believe but if Man United want their mojo back then Solskjaer has to start making some tough calls.

As far as Edinson Cavani is concerned, the forward is more a less a guaranteed starter since the Man United boss will want to rest Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester United face Liverpool next weekend in the Premier League and Ole will want CR7 to be fully rested for this key encounter. This is why Edinson Cavani will lead the line against Atalanta.
