Will England crash out of EURO 2020 due to Southgate’s inability to make tough decisions?

England are one of the favourites to become the European Champions this summer but some think a few poor decisions from Gareth Southgate could cost them a shot at the trophy.

Recently, the manager named his 26-man squad for the Euros and there are some really surprise inclusions including the addition of Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire, both of whom are injured.

Jordan Henderson has just recovered from his injury but he is nowhere close to match fitness so Southgate’s decision to take him to the tournament has not gone down well with pundit Roy Keane.

Keane said before England’s friendly vs Romania: ‘It is already a distraction for Jordan. I was convinced Jordan was going to play the other day and certainly maybe start the game.

‘I know there is talk that he is going to come on for the second 45 minutes[vs Romania], but why not start him in the first 45 minutes where there is obviously more intensity?

‘The second half there’ll no doubt be plenty of changes, so I think it is a huge distraction. Clearly Jordan is not fit, I don’t think he should be involved.

‘He can’t be fit, if he can’t start a game against Romania… physically and mentally today’s game won’t be that tough, he is an experienced player. To not kick a ball for three and a half months and go into a European Championship, he can’t be right.

‘ Now I have heard people say “they want him around the place”… for what? Does he do card tricks? Does he have a sing song? Does he do quizzes in the evenings? What does he do? And if you’re Liverpool you wouldn’t be happy either.’

Harry Maguire is another player who is recovering from his injury but unlike Henderson, the defender is yet to recover from his setback and it’s still not sure when he will be fit to play.

“He’s a massive part of this squad, whether he is playing or not,” Shaw said, as per ESPN.

“I haven’t really spoken to him too much about his injury. I don’t want to pepper him with questions. He is going along with his rehab. He is getting better day in, day out. There are positive signs but I couldn’t say when he’ll be back. Obviously we would like him to be back as soon as possible but that’s down to him and the physios so we’ll let them to do their work.”

After Roy Keane, now Rio Ferdinand has slammed the England manager for taking injured players to the European Championship.

Ferdinand said, as quoted: “As a manager, history tells you that taking players who are not fit and are limping into tournaments, it doesn’t work. I hope it works, I really do, but I will not be surprised if they break down or if they go into games and don’t show their best form because they’re not fit.”

This means players like James Ward-Prowse and Jesse Lingard miss out, both of whom have been in stellar form in the buildup to the Euros.

James Ward-Prowse has been ever present for Southampton this season and he surely deserved a place in the England squad. But instead, the manager has added players like Bukayo Saka to his side. Jesse Lingard also turned his career around in a loan spell at West Ham United and the biggest reason why chose to move out of Man United on a loan deal is because he wanted to have a shot at playing for England in the Euro.
