Eric Dier has been a stellar figure in the Spurs backline during the 2020-21 season but there’s a big chance the England international could be on the bench when Tottenham take on Man City in the Premier League this weekend.

The 27-year-old did not feature in Spurs’ starting line-up against Everton in midweek, right after Mourinho admitted that the defender was suffering from a lack of self-confidence.

Players have moments,” Mourinho said, as reported by The Guardian. “They can be very good, they can be strong personalities, they can be experienced, they can cope with a mistake but in the end, they are men. And they feel more than anyone else these little moments of confidence, of crisis.

“I have to admit that recently our team makes little important mistakes that are punished in terms of our results. And Eric was there, he was one of them. They feel it. And I believe confidence, that drops a little bit.

“But great personality, a team guy, as happy as we were when we won on Sunday. A guy that loves it here, a guy that is loved by the teammates, a guy that I trust, a guy that I consider one of the ones. And he will be back to normality and his normality is to play and be solid.”

Eric Dier was pulled back from midfield to central defence this season by Jose Mourinho and during the first-half of the campaign, the player had done immensely well. But over the past few weeks, it seems like his confidence has truly faltered as he has been in and out of the side.

So the last thing Mourinho would want is to use an under-confident centre-back against a team like Manchester City.

Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld played in central defence against Everton in midweek and there’s a big chance that the same pair could take the pitch against City as well. The Spurs could also use Joe Rodon in place of Sanchez.

But if pure statistics is taken into account then Eric Dier should be one of the first names on Mourinho’s teamsheet on Saturday since he’s already played in 19 Premier League games this season.
