Freddie Ljungberg was appointed the interim manager at Arsenal after the club sacked Unai Emery a couple of weeks ago.

And Saturday’s game against Everton was his final game in charge now that the North London club have announced the appointment of Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

The former Man City assistant coach said, after the appointment: “This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club.

“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it.

“I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.”

But now that Arteta will be taking charge of the club on Sunday, there have been various unconfirmed reports as to what will happen to Freddie Ljungberg.

While some claim, the Gunners legend will stay on while others are of the view that Ljungberg will no longer be associated with the club.

When this same question was asked to Freddie Ljungberg after the 0-0 draw against Everton, the interim boss said that the club have asked him to stay but he is yet to make take a final call.

“It was from one day to another – and I think we had six people leaving,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“You get no people there and you try to fill the gaps and do a lot of jobs yourself.

“I learned a lot about myself and tried to organise things, to get it done. It’s been a big honour but as well it’s been a challenge to try to sort those things out.

“I must then say that Per Mertesacker is our academy manager and he’s been our academy manager plus being my assistant. It’s not been easy for him because he’s been going to kids’ Christmas parties and then back to me, here and there! I must say a big, big thank you to him.

“I spoke to [Mikel] a little bit yesterday, a little bit today. The club has said they want me to stay. Of course, I’m going to have a chat with him tomorrow.”
