Will Liverpool shift their focus back to the Premier League after their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid?

Liverpool suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final and this defeat means they have a mountain to climb in the second leg.

The away goal gives Liverpool some hope but if Madrid manage to score an early goal then the tie will be well and truly lost for the Anfield outfit. And this is why many people feel the Reds should be shifting their focus back to the Premier League.

Last weekend, teams like Chelsea and Spurs dropped points in the league while Liverpool picked up a 3-0 win vs Arsenal. So as things stand, the Anfield side are just three points away from the fourth spot meaning they have a realistic chance of getting back in the top-four by the end of the season.

Many experts believe Liverpool should be focusing on winning their remaining league matches since they do not have too many tough games left but Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that he cannot afford to pick and choose his battles.

The manager said in his post-match press conference: “We cannot be picky with that, we have to go for everything. It’s not like we can now make the decision after that game there is no chance for us in the Champions League anymore.

“In the Premier League, we cannot change it every week – we have to fight until the end and we will. Tonight, this is a really good result for Real Madrid and it’s not that we have any kind of advantage, but with each day and each minute that will go over until the next game the 3-1 will not be that good anymore for Real Madrid and not that bad anymore for us because there is, of course, a chance.

“But, we have to play much better football [and] we cannot get it like tonight. For example, a few years ago when we played against Barcelona and lost 3-0, we played a super game.

“That’s a massive difference and tonight we didn’t but we can play much better and we can be much more uncomfortable to play against than we were tonight and that’s what we have to make sure next week.

“Now we have to recover first and then concentrate on Aston Villa, which is for us a very important game, not only because of the results we had recently or in this season against them.”

Liverpool will give their best shot to recover their Champions League hopes in the second leg but they will have to massively improve their performance if they intend to get anywhere close to the level that Real Madrid had played on Tuesday.

But at the same time, the manager will also have to keep his focus on the Aston Villa game since Dean Smith’s side have been in pretty decent form this season and the last time these two sides met in the Premier League, Villa won by a scoreline of 7-2.
