Liverpool face Everton in the English Premier League this weekend and the Reds have not been beaten by their local arch-rivals at home since 1999.

Despite so many ups and downs over the years, Liverpool have managed to keep their record intact but there are fears that the Toffees might finally taste victory at Anfield owing to Liverpool’s recent record.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have uncannily suffered losses in their previous three home matches and out of these, two have come against Burnley and Brighton.

Man City picked up a 4-1 win over Liverpool two weeks ago and then the Reds suffered yet another defeat in the league, going down 3-1 to Leicester at the King Power.

Everton have grown in leaps and bounds under Carlo Ancelotti and according to former Liverpool man Garry Gillespie, the Toffees will look to rattle Liverpool’s cage on Saturday and try to break that decade-old record by picking up a win.

He told The Sportsman: “I think when you’re playing for a club like Liverpool or even Everton, there’s always pressure, and on the managers as well. After the recent run of form Liverpool have shown, there is a lot of pressure, especially the fact they’re reigning champions as well.

“This is a massive game for both sets of players and both sets of fans. It’s always a big encounter and there’s always pressure going into these games.

“The build-up is maybe more intense than what other games would be, and in the strangest way that might help Liverpool.

“When you look at that record, records are there to be broken. I’m sure Carlo Ancelotti will be saying exactly the same to his players – that’s history, it’s in the past, it’s not about the present and certainly not the future. I think Everton will be coming to Anfield with confidence.

“They look an all-round decent outfit and I think when you have Dominic Calvert-Lewin, they’ve certainly found a goalscorer who can equal the best of them. If you have players who score goals I think you’re always in games and have a chance of winning.”

Liverpool got back to winning ways by beating RB Leipzig in the Champions League in midweek so Klopp’s side have some sort of confidence under their belt. And, on the other hand, Everton lost their midweek PL clash vs Manchester City.

So, despite all the recent roadblocks, the home side still go in as the slight favourites but Everton does have the fire-power to break down Liverpool’s backline on Saturday and shatter the voodoo.
