Chelsea signed Marc Cucurella got his first start against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and the summer signing was one of the standout players for the Blues.

He played the full 90 minutes and provided the assist for Chelsea’s first goal which was scored by Koulibaly. On the defensive side also he was very strong making as many as four recoveries and he was dispossessed only once during the whole game.

Cucurella’s fine performance means Thomas Tuchel will have a big decision to make on whom to select for the left wing-back’s role this weekend.

Obviously, there are early days but the manager’s selection at Elland Road could very well set the tone for who the first-choice player could be in that position throughout the season.

Will Marc Cucurella start ahead of Ben Chilwell?

The 24-year-old is very much aware of the competition for his position but he’s claimed that so far, Ben Chilwell has been very supportive of him at the club.

“[Ben] helped me a lot in these first days, he’s a very good person,” Cucurella said(h/t Fotmob).

“We need to work hard to play in one position. We have two players for one position, but if one player is better, he will put him in the line-up. This is good for the team.

“As for my best position, the three positions on the left side is good for me. I think maybe best for me is back four, left-back, because it’s where I played in the academies.”

Ben Chilwell arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2020 but to date, he’s played only 56 games for the club across all competitions. He has been massively injury-prone since joining the Blues and last season, he played in only seven Premier League games for the club.

Constant injuries have been a big problem for Chilwell so he will need to keep himself fit or else, he is going to lose his place to Marc Cucurella at the drop of a hat.

The ex-Brighton man proved his worth with a stellar performance against Spurs but we think Thomas Tuchel could bring back Ben Chilwell to the first XI this weekend. This is his time to shine as well because anything other than a top-drawer performance will be excuse enough for Tuchel to bench for gameweek four.
