Tottenham Hotspur have signed Mathys Tel on a loan deal, and the French forward has been cleared to play on Thursday night.
Spurs will take on Liverpool in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, and with several key players out injured, Tel’s availability is a big boost for Ange Postecoglou. Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner, and James Maddison are all sidelined and Spurs’ midfield crisis has forced Kulusevski to play in midfield.
In his pre-match press conference, Postecoglou confirmed: “Kevin and Mathys are both available, have trained, and are clear to play, so they’re all good.”
Will Mathys Tel start against Liverpool?
Tel joined the Tottenham squad on Monday, giving him just two days to train under his new manager and get familiar with his teammates. However, given Spurs’ attacking injury crisis, there is a strong possibility that he could start at Anfield.
Postecoglou has expressed doubts over Kevin Daso’s involvement, but with most of his first-choice attackers unavailable, the manager has limited options up front.
Tel featured in 14 games for Bayern Munich before securing his loan move to England, but he has played only 152 minutes of football in 2025. Last season, Mathys Tel scored 10 goals in 41 appearances for the Bavarians but the 19-year-old has fallen down the pecking order since Kompany’s arrival and this season, he’s not scored a single goal in Germany.
While he lacks regular game time, using him as the centre-forward would allow Richarlison to operate from the right flank.
Although Richarlison can play centrally without any major problem, his presence on the right wing would be a significant upgrade over 17-year-old Mikey Moore. Moore has made 14 appearances this season, but his performances have been inconsistent.
Postecoglou has been forced to rely on Moore due to all the injuries, but with Mathys Tel’s arrival, he can now name a more balanced and experienced attacking trio against Liverpool.
