Matt Doherty has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur after according to Paul Robinson, he will be heading out in January.

The North London side have signed Emerson Royal during the summer meaning Doherty will get scrambling for his game time in the side.

And given that he played in only 17 Premier League games last season, Paul Robinson believes the 29-year-old has no future at the club.

Robinson told Football Insider when asked if Doherty was leaving in January: “Yeah, possibly. It depends what system the manager wants to play really. It is really surprising actually, Nuno relied on him at Wolves.

“Clearly, it hasn’t worked for him at Tottenham whether it was under Jose or Nuno.

“He hasn’t played to the level we expect. Whether he does get the opportunity with Tanganga and Emerson ahead of him, it may be that he moves on in January.

“It looks like Nuno is using a four, not a five, which could mean his chances are limited going forward.”

This season, Matt Doherty has played only 8 minutes of Premier League football for Spurs and we don’t expect the situation to get any better now that Emerson Royal has also joined the side.

It will be Tanganga and Emerson who will fight for the right-back or the right wing-back role this season so the former Wolves man is going to be a benchwarmer.

The 29-year-old will only get to play in the Europa Conference League, a competition of least importance so we also expect him to be offloaded during the start of the new year.

The full-back still has three more years left on his current deal and his current valuation is £14.40 million so Spurs should be able to get a decent transfer fee from his sale.
