According to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, Pau Torres could be closer to joining Tottenham Hotspur rather than Manchester United.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is really eager to sign Pau Torres for his new-look starting XI but recently, Spurs have also been chasing the Spaniard. Conte is planning to overhaul his defence and as per multiple experts, he wants Torres and Bastoni to become his first-choice central defensive pairing next season.

Taylor is claiming that Antonio Conte is looking to use Giovani Lo Celso as a counterweight to try and bring Pau Torres on board.

“Torres has been the subject of initial swap-deal discussions with Villarreal because obviously, they want to sign Lo Celso on a permanent basis,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

It’s an open secret that Villarreal want to sign Lo Celso permanently and Conte is ready to use this opportunity to sign the 25-year-old defender.

This is undoubtedly the biggest cause of concern for Manchester United and to add to this, Tottenham Hotspur have returned to the Champions League and that is a big problem for United.

Spurs have come a long way from where they were one year ago and several players are now more than willing to play under Antonio Conte. Conte is a multiple title winner and this one factor has allowed Spurs to attract players like Ivan Perisic and Bissouma.

Are Man United set to miss out on Pau Torres?

This is a very ominous update for Man United because if Spurs can offer a cash-plus-player deal for Pau Torres then United will find it really hard to compete. Torres is more valuable than Lo Celso so Tottenham have to offer cash along with the loanee.

Manchester United are not totally out of the race yet but if they want to have even the slightest chance at signing the defender then Erik ten Hag will have to personally convince him.

The new boss is still undecided on Harry Maguire’s future and until he can sort that out, we don’t think Pau Torres will agree to join them. Ten Hag and Maguire as well Lindelof in his squad so Torres is bound to have doubts over his future at Old Trafford.

Spurs, on the other hand, have a proper plan in place plus they will be playing in the Champions League. Combine that with the offer of Lo Celso and Manchester United have every chance of fretting that they are going to miss out on the centre-back.
