Chelsea have joined Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to reports.

The Express cites BILD’s Christian Falk claiming: “Chelsea will rival Manchester United for the signing of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, it has been claimed. The France international is a vital asset for Zinedine Zidane over in Spain. However, a parting of the ways could be on the cards come the end of the campaign.

“Kurt Zouma is starting to resemble the player the Blues hoped he would be, while Antonio Rudiger has flourished since being brought in from the cold. However, Chelsea know they need more if they’re to win the Premier League title for the first time since Antonio Conte’s spell in charge.

“And, now, BILD journalist Christian Falk has claimed the west London giants will challenge United for the signing of Varane this summer.”

Will Raphael Varane join the Premier League in the summer?

Raphael Varane still has one more year left on his current deal with Real Madrid and chances are he won’t be putting pen on paper to a new deal at the club.

If this happens to be the case then Madrid will have to cash in on the centre-back at the end of this season and so far Man United were running a one-horse race in this transfer. Now the entry of Chelsea makes things a lot more interesting, especially since they have the financial stability to overbid their English rivals.

Tuchel will need a world-class defender if he wishes to challenge for the Premier League title next season and someone like Raphael Varane will be the perfect fit.

Man United too need defensive reinforcements since Lindelof has been blowing hot and cold this season and every other pundit has urged Solskjaer to bring in a new centre-back if he wishes to seriously rival the likes of Man City and Liverpool.

It’s still unclear as to where the 27-year-old will end up playing next season but the entry of Chelsea in the mix is a really great sign for Real Madrid, especially if they can’t make Varane sign a new deal at the club this summer.
