La Liga giants Real Madrid have been linked with Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero and now, the central defender has talked about his future.
Romero had joined Spurs in 2021 on a loan deal from Atalanta and then in 2022, the Lillywhites paid around €52 million to sign him permanently. Over the three years, Cristian Romero has featured in 98 games for Spurs and right now, he is one of the top players in Ange’s squad.
During the course of this ongoing transfer window, Real Madrid have shown an interest in the Argentine international but in a recent interview, the 26-year-old made it clear that he has his heart at Tottenham.
When asked about potentially leaving Spurs, he told ESPN: “I always strive to play at my best. I have a lot of respect for Tottenham. They’ve always given me a lot of support here, so I like playing here.
“I don’t think about other clubs or their possibilities. I know there’s a lot of talk about a possible move, but I’m calm.
“At my club, I play differently to the national team, more forward. I still have years left in Europe and I want to see where I can go. Hopefully this year we can win a title at Tottenham.”
Will Real Madrid try and make a move for Cristian Romero?
After missing out on Leny Yoro, Carlo Ancelotti is still on the lookout for a new defender so they are being linked with several top defenders, including Cristian Romero.
However, the Spurs central defender is currently valued at €65 million and his contract expires in 2027 which means if Daniel Levy wants to cash in on him, Tottenham will probably ask around €80-90 million.
While Madrid won’t mind spending a hefty sum in trying to land a new central defender, there’s little to no chance that Perez will be ready to pay €80 million for someone like Cristian Romero.
Even though Romero has boldly claimed that he wants to remain at Tottenham an interest from a team like Real Madrid is unmatched. Not a lot of players have the willpower to reject an approach from Madrid so if the Los Blancos come calling, there’s every chance that Cristian Romero will hand in a transfer request.
However, Real Madrid are not expected to go after Cristian Romero any time soon. Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba might be at the twilight of their playing career but there’s no need to hit the panic button just yet which is why Ancelotti won’t mind waiting for one more year to bring in a new central defender.
