Chelsea winger Willian is set to be a free agent at the end of the 2019-20 season and Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing him for the next campaign.
The winger has been tipped to move out of Stamford Bridge for some time but now Frank Lampard has hinted that the club could look to offer new deals to the players who are set to be out of contract in the summer.
“It is still uncertain if and when play will get underway. We have big players [out of contract] so that’s something I’m obviously looking at very carefully,” Lampard told Sky Sports, as reported by The Mirror.
“The ones who are out of contract here have been great servants for the club, and actually have a lot of feeling for the club.
“Of course they’ll be concerned about themselves, in terms of how training is now is and if the pre-season is a rush they’re going to have to make sure they’re alright.
“So it’s going to have to be something we have to look at, hopefully, we can make that arrangement can be made so they can stay with us.
“I would love the squad to look as it has all season, but we’ll have to see how that works.”
Will Willian sign a new contract at Chelsea?
This is not the first time, Chelsea have offered Willian a new deal since a couple of months ago, the Blues did try and make him agree to a new deal. But the Brazilian rejected the offer since the club was giving him a short-term deal while Willian wanted something long-term.
Chelsea are a club which are known to offer only short-term contracts to players who are over 30 and we doubt if the manager will look to bypass this rule for Willian.
So if Lampard comes up with a one or two-year deal once again, the 31-year-old is once again going to turn it down and head out of the club as a free agent in the summer.
And this is great news for both Arsenal and Spurs since the Brazilian has hinted that he wishes to remain in the Premier League and that too in London for the rest of his playing career.
