Man Utd are set to sign Nemanja Matic from Chelsea in a £40 million deal if reports are the believed.

Matic has agreed to personal terms with United and the transfer is said to be complete within this week according to The Guardian. But Nemanja Matic to Man Utd might also take some time due to the sudden demise of Jose Mourinho’s father on Sunday.

Mourinho wants to sign Matic as a long term replacement for Micheal Carrick who turns 36 next month. Even though Carrick has signed a new one year contract with the club but the aging midfield might not be able to play week in week out.

Matic is set to earn as much as £155,000 per week in the form of wages. And the Serbian is due to have him medicals in the coming days. Mourinho has been a long term admirer of the 28-year-old having signed him for Chelsea back in 2014.

Mourinho has always had a soft spot for players who can do their defensive duties properly. And Matic fits the brief perfectly. The departure of Matic from Chelsea would also mean that Antonio Conte will be able to hold Cesc Fabregas. It would also mean that inbound player Tiemoue Bakayoko will have less competiton at the club.

After Matic’s move to United is officially declared it will be the club’s second signing since Victor Lindelof. As United return to playing Chmapions League football next season, Mourinho is desparate to strengthening up his squad with a series of new signings.

Mourinho is on the lookout for a new striker after the club decided not to provide Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a new contract. And the club is still in pursuit of Alvaro Morata after Real Madrid had rejected their initial bid.
