It is no secret that Alexis Sanchez is on the verge of leaving Arsenal – either in January or at the end of the season, and moving to Manchester City in order to reunite with his old boss Pep Guardiola.

But little does anyone know that the Chilean was very close to signing a one-year contract extension with the Gunners sometime during December of last year.

Sanchez who is currently running out his contract at the Emirates in order to move to Manchester had agreed to put pen to paper on a contract extension – as reported by the Times, but it seems that the heavy and humiliating defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League changed his mind.

The Gunners crashed out of the Champions League last season thanks to a 10-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the round of 16. And it is being believed that it was after this defeat that the Chilean had told the Arsenal management about his desires to leave the club and join Manchester City.

Sanchez was on the verge of signing for City during the summer transfer window but the Gunners blocked the move during the final few hours on deadline day – mainly because they themselves were unable to sign a replacement. Now reports claim that City are in no hurry to make a move for Sanchez and are willing to wait it out until the end of the season and get him for free. The Chilean too has recently rejected a huge offer from another club just to play for Manchester City.
