Arsenal are reportedly trying to sign Reims centre-back Axel Disasi as a replacement to Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Gunners had been trying to sign Gabriel for a couple of months now but it looks like the defender is on his way to join Everton in the summer.

But instead of sitting and whining over the failed transfer, the Gunners have already shifted their focus to signing 22-year-old Axel Disasi from the Ligue 1.

Disasi has been with Reims since 2016 and this season he has caught the attention of a number of clubs, having already made 27 appearances for the club in the Ligue 1.

And with just one year left on his current deal, Reims are expected to cash in on him this summer rather than risk losing him as a free agent next year.

Goal.com are reporting: Goal has learnt that Arsenal have now formally contacted the French side to register their interest in the defender, who looks certain to leave the Stade Auguste-Delaune at the end of the season.

“Disasi has just one year left on his contract and won’t be extending his current deal, so Reims will allow him to move on rather than let him walk away on a free transfer in 2021.”

Is Axel Disasi a good signing for Arsenal?

Mikel Arteta is badly in need of defensive reinforcements for the upcoming season and it seems like he’s wasting no time in going after young defenders.

Axel Disasi is reportedly going to cost around £13 million which is a very decent price to pay for a player who has been at the top of his game this season.

But what remains to be seen is how Arteta plans to use Disasi next season since he already has a number of centre-backs at his disposal.

The manager currently has players like David Luiz, Rob Holding and Sokratis along with loanee Pablo Mari who is expected to be handed a permanent deal at the club.

Also, the club will be getting the services of William Saliba who had signed for the club last summer from Ligue 1. And hence if Axel Disasi was to move to the Premier League it will be very hard for him to break into the first XI at Arsenal – at least in the upcoming season.

The Gunners though aren’t the only club interested in signing the centre-back with clubs West Ham United and Southampton also keeping tabs on the player.
