Rangers FC kicked off their Europa League campaign with a win as they beat Feyenoord 1-0 at Ibrox on Thursday.

The win means that the Gers are now joint top of Group G with FC Porto and this will be a really big boost in helping them move to the next stage of the competition.

Rangers took the lead in the 23rd minute thanks to Sheyi Ojo but it was the defence which deserved special praise for holding their nerves and keeping a clean sheet.

The Teddy Bears should have scored 4 goals before half time but they managed to strike the bar three times including one from the penalty spot from James Tavernier.

And speaking after the match, Steven Gerrard especially praised Borna Barisic since he was rock solid in defence despite the Dutch side creating a number of good chances.

“Borna was outstanding. The back four I picked last night, I went for experience,” he told reporters(as quoted by Daily Star).

“I brought two internationals in, Filip (Helander) being one of them, who have experienced that level before both internationally and in Europe. So that was a no-brainer.

“Borna is the Croatian left-back so he has played in those sort of games against that level of opponent.

“He is a top player. We brought Borna in here for a reason because we feel he can contribute a lot from left-back.

“I thought his performance was outstanding last night and that performance should give him a lot of belief and confidence to build on that but Borna is very highly respected in the staff and the dressing room.

“Other people have obviously got opinions on him but we don’t take much notice of that. We just worry about what we see and the belief we have got in the player and it’s certainly there.”
