The UEFA Europa League final was supposed to be played on May the 27th in Poland but now that date has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
While some reports have claimed that the final will be played in the final week of June but now UEFA in an official statement have confirmed that a new date for the final is yet to be decided.
The statement read: “No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates. The working group, established last week as a result of the conference call among the stakeholders of European football, which was chaired by UEFA President, Aleksander Čeferin, will analyse the options available.
“The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course.”
And this will be great news for teams who are still playing in the Europa League since there’s a massive chance that these clubs might have to go through a cramped schedule in order to finish their remaining games in their respective domestic leagues.
But with the Europa League finals being postponed, teams like Manchester United and Wolves will have a chance of winning the tournament given they are amongst the favourites to win the UEL.
Yes, both these Premier League clubs are in the top three teams who are favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season.
According to FiveThirtyEight.com, it is Manchester United are on top of the list to make it to the final at 45% followed by Leverkusen who are at 36%.
Third on the list are Wolves who have a 21% chance of making it to final whereas they have a 10% chance of winning the Europa League.
Manchester United obviously top this department with a 27% chance primarily since teams like Ajax and Arsenal have also been knocked out of the tournament.
Inter Milan still remain in the hunt but as per the list, they are sixth behind the likes of Sevilla and Getafe.
Both Wolves and Manchester United still have a fighting chance of finishing in the top-four of the Premier League table but they will also be looking at the Europa League as a sure-shot route to getting amongst the big boys.
Man United have taken this path once before when they beat Ajax in the Europa League final a couple of seasons ago under the Jose Mourinho reign.
