England manager Gareth Southgate has named his first England squad post the successful World Cup in Russia.

And the Three Lions boss has chosen to make a number of tough as well as funny calls.

Here are some of the major talking points from the England squad announcement:

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has received his long-awaited England call-up after making an impressive start to the new Premier League season.

Talking about Shaw, the manager said: “I am impressed with his physical condition and he had an extra edge in recent games when it has been going against his team, looking back to his powerful best.”

The trio of Jamie Vardy, Ashley Young and Gary Cahill have not been selected in the 23-man squad but the manager has claimed that all three remain available and will be called up whenever the team is in need of experience.

With Cahill out of the picture, Burnley’s 25-year-old centre-back James Tarkowski has received a call-up.

Southampton’s Alex McCarthy who has received his maiden England call-up remains the only uncapped player in the whole squad.

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has also received a call-up while Joe Hart has once again been snubbed as Southgate claimed it is too early for Hart to make a comeback.

Apart from these, a number of fans have pointed fingers at Gareth Southgate for selecting Danny Welbeck since the Arsenal forward has made no sort of contribution to Unai Emery’s side since the start of the new year.

The 23-man squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Alex McCarthy (Southampton), Jordan Pickford(Everton).

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Harry Maguire(Leicester City), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), James Tarkowski (Burnley), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Eric Dier(Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).
