Man United have their sights set on Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini but as per the latest rumours, EPL rivals Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen to land him.

Giorgio Scalvini, a product of the Atalanta youth academy, has emerged as a prominent figure in the current season, showcasing his talent as a centre-back. With an impressive rating of 7.27 out of 10, he has solidified his position as a regular starter in Serie A, making notable contributions to Atalanta’s defensive efforts. Since his debut in June 2022, Scalvini’s stellar performances have earned him recognition on the international stage, earning seven caps for the Italian national team.

According to Alfredo Pedulla, the Italian side was ready to cash in on the defender during the January transfer window given someone was willing to spend around €60 million. Man United did not take major strides towards signing the 20-year-old last month but they are still keeping tabs.

Manchester United are expected to go back for Giorgio Scalvini during the summer but this time, there will be a lot more competition because Man City and Chelsea also wish to bring the defender to the EPL.

United will part ways with Lindelof, Evans and possibly Raphael Varane at the end of this season so Erik Ten Hag wants to bring in at least two centre-backs to fill the void.

Giorgio Scalvini’s current market value is €40 million and his contract runs until 2028 so €60 million is a very reasonable valuation but if the defender has a great second half then Atalanta will hack up his price even further.

If Manchester City and Chelsea express genuine interest in acquiring the talented youngster, it won’t be a surprise if Atalanta sets a valuation in the ballpark of €100 million.

If Manchester United miss out on Champions League football then they will have a very limited transfer budget so they cannot afford to get into a transfer battle with their two EPL rivals. €60 million is a very acceptable fee for someone who’s played 80 games for Atalanta but if one of the three clubs has to pay anything more than €80 million then it will be a gamble signing.

MCFC are perhaps the only side who can afford to take such a risk given they have already players like Ruben Dias, Gvardiol, Akanji and Ake but Man United and Chelsea cannot mess around too much. Poch will need to sort out his defence very soon and even Ten Hag needs to find a long-term partner to Lisandro Martinez.

Moving to the EPL will definitely be a step up for Giorgio Scalvini but the youngster will not only want top-tier European football but he will wish to join a team who can offer him regular playtime next campaign.
