When Arsenal announced Unai Emery as their new boss, every player in the squad knew that they would have to prove their mettle once again in order to gain the trust of the new manager. Every player except five of them.

As the weeks rolled by, reports have claimed that there are five players in the current Gunners squad who are ‘untouchable’ meaning they will not be sold during the summer by Emery.

And amongst these five players, there’s only one defender and that is Hector Bellerin.

The full-back is currently one of the best right-backs in the Premier League and now the player has revealed why he chose to move out of the famed La Masia academy at Barcelona and join Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Speaking to Wealthsimple’s Money Diaries, the 23-year-old said: “When footballers in Europe turn 16, they can sign working contracts, which means they can go abroad. I was playing with FC Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia, and when I turned 16, I thought I would stay with Barca.

“But I wasn’t feeling like they were showing me on paper what they were saying — let’s put it that way. I’m not talking just financially, but also in terms of my path into the first team.

“Halfway through that year, I got the call that Arsenal were interested in me. So, I went to London, saw the facilities, met with the boss, and they made me an offer.

“Everything looked so great, and my path into the first team was clear — obviously as long as I worked hard and I was reaching my targets. I like challenges and adventures.

“Even though people might have thought I was putting myself in a tough position by leaving my country and my family, it was actually quite easy, and exciting.”

Ever since moving to Arsenal, Hector Bellerin has established himself as one of the key members of the Arsenal squad and last season there were talks that the player was wanted back by Barcelona.

But now that the Gunners have brought in a new manager and the fact that Unai Emery has shown so much faith in the player, there’s very little doubt regarding Hector Bellerin’s future at the Emirates.
