Bayer Leverkusen are preparing to part ways with Jeremie Frimpong with some of the biggest European clubs interested in signing the midfielder.
Much like the other Bayer players, Frimpong has been excellent this season with 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions but with a release clause of just €40 million, it’s highly unlikely he is going to remain in Germany next season.
Barcelona have a long-standing interest in the 23-year-old while out in England, Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with him. Frimpong is a product of City’s youth academy and as per some rumours, MCFC have already established contact with the player’s representatives.
What will Jeremie Frimpong bring to the table?
Since moving to the Bundesliga from Celtic, the midfielder has been in top form with 25 goals and 32 assists against her name in just 142 appearances.
This season, he has an xG of 8.18 and an xA of 5.44 and in 31 Bundesliga appearances, he has created as many as 45 chances with a passing accuracy of 82%.
He is primarily a right-sided midfielder but he can also play as a right-winger and at both the Manchester clubs, those are very sought-after qualities. Casemiro, McTominay and Eriksen are all set to leave so he will be very much welcome at Manchester United and down the road at City, the Leverkusen man can be the ideal replacement for Bernardo Silva.
Jeremie Frimpong is a box of tricks who is great with the ball at his feet and apart from his forward contributions, the 23-year-old is a willing runner who occasionally helps out his defenders.
Will the midfielder move to England or Spain?
Barcelona can certainly do with a player of his calibre but there’s no way they will be able to land Jeremie Frimpong unless he specifically rejects other offers to join Hansi Flick’s team.
Manchester United and Manchester City are the preferred destinations for the midfielder and since he’s already spent time in England, a return won’t be too unsettling.
Unless Barcelona can sell players, they won’t even be able to trigger his buy-out clause and that will be the end of the line for them. If the Catalans are serious about signing Jeremie Frimpong, they will first have to make sure they have the money to pay Leverkusen because, without that, a move to the Premier League is the only other outcome.
We are yet to hear from the Dutch midfielder but given a choice he would much rather play under Pep Guardiola at Man City rather than be part of a rebuild project at United or Barcelona.
