Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is expected to add a couple of new signings to his squad during the summer transfer window and the Red Devils have already bagged the services of two players in the form of Fred and Diogo Dalot.

And reports have suggested that Spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld could be the third player who comes into the Theatre of Dreams.

Mourinho has been in pursuit of Alderweireld for a couple of months now and United have already made an initial bid for the Belgium defender.

The bid which was expected to be in the region of £55 million has been swiftly rejected by Tottenham Hotspur.

According to reports, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wants nothing less than £75 million for Toby Alderweireld – the same amount for which Liverpool bought Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton in January.

It seems Van Dijk’s move to Liverpool has set a benchmark for world-class defenders and Spurs as of now want nothing less than £75 million.

United though have come back with a strong response and the Manchester outfit have made it clear that they will not be faced with the demands of Daniel Levy and will walk away from negotiations if Spurs fail to reach a negotiation quickly.

This stand between the two clubs means that United will not be able to sign Toby Alderweireld before the World Cup starts this week.

Alderweireld is without a doubt one of the most accomplished defenders in the Premier League right now and in over three seasons that he has been with Tottenham, the Belgium centre-back has managed to play 115 games for the Lilywhites.

In the 2017-18 season, the 29-year-old managed to play only 14 games in the Premier League owing to a hamstring injury which kept him out of action for three whole months.
