Chelsea suffered a loss in their Champions League group stage opener vs Valencia and on top of the defeat, Lampard also lost Mason Mount to an injury.

The youngster has been one of Chelsea’s top players so far this season but early on during the Valencia match, Mason Mount was on the receiving end of a nasty tackle from Coquelin.

Even though the midfielder tried hard to walk it off but replays showed the injury was indeed serious and eventually he had to be taken off after a few minutes.

But after the match, there were reports that Mason Mount was not seen with crutches after the match which was indeed a good sign.

And then further reports suggested that scans showed no signs of a ligament tear meaning the midfielder could be fit in time to be available for selection when Liverpool come to town on Sunday.

Now though Goal.com’s Nizaar Kinsella has quoted Frank Lampard and the manager’s statement more or less indicate that Mount will not be ready for the Liverpool fixture.

The manager said: “There is a lot of swelling and it didn’t look the best. Some injuries for the ankle if there’s a lot of damage there’s not a lot you can do.

“You can strap it if it is not too bad.”

If Mason Mount is indeed ruled out then it will surely be a big setback for the Blues manager but he does have a like-to-like replacement in the form of Christian Pulisic who is yet to make his mark in a Chelsea shirt.

But all is not doom and gloom as the manager has hinted that N’Golo Kante could be ready in time to feature in the matchday squad vs Liverpool on Sunday.

“It is a boost with N’Golo. We all know the importance for him. The question for me is how fit he is because he has had a long time out.” Lampard added.

With Mason Mount out of action, the manager will most certainly lose a lot of creativity going upfront but if he can get N’Golo Kante back into midfield then the Frenchman will no doubt help steady the ship.
