Chelsea vs Man City: What actions are being taken for the racial abuse directed at Raheem Sterling?

Chelsea inflicted Manchester City’s first defeat of the season and in doing so, the Blues also managed to end their poor run of form.

The Blues won the match 2-0 courtesy of goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz and everyone expected the mood after the match to be one of celebration.

But now things have taken an unexpected turn with accusations of racial abuse coming to the forefront.

Some Twitter users caught hold of a video clip from the match in which a few Chelsea fans are seen hurling racial abuses at Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.




And this has immediately caused a whole uproar amongst the footballing community.

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out has issued a statement, regarding the whole incident saying: “We’ve received reports from a variety of sources about an incident of alleged racist abuse at the Chelsea-Manchester City game.

“We will forward those to Chelsea and offer our support in their investigation.

“Yet another great day of football damaged by prejudice.”

And now the Chelsea, as well as the Metropolitan Police, are investigating are investigating the alleged racist abuse on Raheem Sterling.




The Met Police said: “We are aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player at a Chelsea v Manchester City game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, December 8.




“We will review the footage to determine whether any offences have been committed.”

Chelsea have also released a statement vowing to take the strictest possible action after the person – if he is found guilty of racial abuse on Raheem Sterling.

“We’re aware of reports and video footage. We will investigate the matter and take the strongest possible action where necessary,” a Chelsea spokesperson said.

Up until now, no arrests have been made regarding the incident but if the concerned person is found guilty then surely he is in line to receive a line ban for Stamford Bridge.

UPDATE:

Raheem Sterling though has come out to slam the newspapers for ‘fueling racism’ in the way they portray young black footballers.




And in response to the whole incident, he posted a screenshot on Instagram.

Good morning I just want to say , I am not normally the person to talk a lot but when I think I need my point to heard I will speak up. Regarding what was said at the Chelsea game as you can see by my reaction I just had to laugh because I don’t expect no better. For example you have two young players starting out there careers both play for the same team, both have done the right thing. Which is buy a new house for there mothers who have put in a lot of time and love into helping them get where they are, but look how the news papers get there message across for the young black player and then for the young white payer. I think this in unacceptable both innocent have not done a thing wrong but just by the way it has been worded. This young black kid is looked at in a bad light. Which helps fuel racism an aggressive behaviour, so for all the news papers that don’t understand why people are racist in this day and age all i have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity an give all players an equal chance.
