Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard has come out to slam the SPFL for not forcing the issue when it comes to restarting the season unlike countries like Germany and England.

Germany has already announced that the Bundesliga will be back in May while the Premier League is trying their best to restart in June. But the Premiership has already ended thanks to a resolution and right now the board seems in no hurry whatsoever to finish the remaining matches and conclude the whole season.

Speaking to BT Sport, Steven Gerrard said, as quoted: “I want to be back to work, I want to carry on with this season and I think with the majority of the players and the coaches, there’s a real will to finish the season off.

“Unfortunately, that’s not the same case with the governing body who seem to me to be desperate to finish everything off and move on into the next season. Around the world and around Europe, especially down in England and in Germany, there’s a big will to continue and get back playing football and try and finish it off.

“These governing bodies are connecting with the teams and there seems to be a lot of chat and a lot of meetings in terms of ‘how can we at least try and get football back?’ and have a plan A in place, a plan B, a plan C.

“If we can’t and we’re told we can’t, there’s got to be a point where you hold your hand up and it can’t possibly happen. The disappointment from our point of view is that there doesn’t seem to be that energy and that will and that determination up in Scotland.

“It seems to be the complete opposite: ‘let’s move on as quick as we can’. From a Rangers point of view, we want to get back to playing football when it’s physically safe to do so.”

Steven Gerrard is not the only person who is eager to get back on the pitch with Celtic manager Neil Lennon also expressing his desire to play their remaining matches.

“Everyone at the club – the players, myself, my backroom staff, the fans – want to play the games,” he told Celtic TV, as reported. “Whether that can be achieved or not, that’s another thing.

“It feels like an age away since we played our last game against St Mirren at home, so in terms of keeping the players motivated, keeping them occupied, their own self-motivation is still very, very strong.

“The only thing they’re asking me is when can they get back to training as a group and when can we all start back again, but, obviously, no-one has an answer to that at the minute.”

Apart from the Bhoys boss, Celtic’s Ryan Cristie is also eager to get back on the pitch as he told BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra, as reported: “Everybody at our club would be desperate to play out the final few games.

“Because of the way we were playing before the break, we were on such a terrific run that we felt really confident and towards the end of the season there are so many massive games you won’t be a part of so it’s gutting to miss out on those.”
