The sacking of Everton boss Ronald Koeman comes as a severe blow to the hopes of signing Ross Barkley for both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
Barkley had fallen out of favour under the Dutch coach and it reached to a point where he was allowed to leave the club during the summer. And the move almost happened but Barkley decided against it and took a U-turn during the final few hours on deadline day. It was reported that Barkley had completed a medical for Chelsea during the wee hours but then had a change of heart and went back to Merseyside.
Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in the player during the summer and after the move with Chelsea fell out Pochettino was surely thinking that they still have a chance of signing him up next summer.
But now Everton’s new caretaker manager David Unsworth is singing on a completely different tune. Unlike Koeman, Unsworth feels that Barkley still has a lot to offer at the club and he will try his level best to persuade him to sign a new contract with the club.
While speaking to SkySports, the caretaker boss said, “I would absolutely love him to stay,
“He is a top talent. Everton has done great for him and he has done great for Everton, but he could be one of the all-time greats here.
“I would love him to be persuaded by myself, the chairman (Bill Kenwright) and Farhad (Moshiri) to stay and sign a contract because we should not be losing players of his quality.
“He is a great player that has come through our ranks and I feel strongly that we shouldn’t be losing our own players.
“I have not spoken to him about that since I spoke to the chairman yesterday, but I will be doing.
“I would love him to sit down with me and have a cup of tea and discuss the possibility of signing and staying here, because we love him and he loves Everton.”
