Newcastle United have successfully managed to turn things around under Eddie Howe and going into the Chelsea game, the Magpies are 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Newcastle are yet to taste defeat in 2022 and they even managed to outplay and win against a Southampton side who have been in really good form this season. With this kind of confidence under their belt, one would imagine that Howe’s side will be able to hold Chelsea as well.

The Magpies head to Stamford Bridge on Sunday and while this should be a closely fought contest but according to Paul Merson, Chelsea’s superior quality will be too much to handle for the away side.

He wrote for Sportskeeda: “I’m going to be at this game, and I think Chelsea should be able to win. Newcastle beat Southampton this week, and I think that’s it for them – they should be safe in the Premier League now. Chelsea beat Norwich and that’s it for them too – they should make it to the top four.

“Chelsea are in a bit of a situation at the moment. Rudiger’s gone anyway – you don’t refuse to sign a contract and lose eighty grand a week for nothing. When players don’t sign contracts, you can take it for granted that they’ll leave more often than not.

“Where can you take Chelsea from here? They’re the champions of Europe and they’ve won everything. Whoever buys Chelsea at this point will probably just lose money. They’ll have to start selling players – if they can get their money back for Timo Werner, they’ll probably sell him too.

“Newcastle have been absolutely outstanding to do what they’ve done in the Premier League so far, but I’m going to go with a comfortable Chelsea win. To be fair, I’d probably predict the same result if this fixture was taking place a year from now.”

Newcastle United have picked up four wins and one draw in their previous five matches but Chelsea are also in great form because their only loss in the same number of matches was the EFL Cup final loss to Liverpool.

The Blues are obviously going through a lot of troubles in terms of their ownership but those issues have not yet impacted their on-field performances.

Chelsea are obviously the favourites to pick up a win on Sunday but unlike Merson, we have a feeling that Newcastle United might be able to pick up something from this match.

Eddie Howe has instilled a winning mentality amongst his players and with the way they picked apart Hassenhutl’s Southampton, we are pretty confident that Chelsea are in form a hard time as well.
