Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged his players not to focus on all the Alexis Sanchez transfer talk that is going on around them and instead focus on Sunday’s high profile clash against Liverpool.

Reports have suggested that Manchester City have pulled out of the race to sign Alexis Sanchez and Manchester United are now the favourites to land the Chilean International.

But when Pep Guardiola was asked by the media about his club’s long-standing interest in Alexis Sanchez he said that he along with his players should pay attention to all the gossip that is circulating.

“They have two choices. Follow what you say or follow me. Hopefully, I’ll convince them to follow football on the pitch,” he said.

“Sunday is Liverpool – I want to focus on that,” he said. “Everyone knows the quality of Alexis – but it’s Liverpool. I’m sorry I can’t answer about Alexis and other players.

“We have to choose which to focus on – and I want to focus on what we are doing on the field,” he added. “I would not like my players to listen, see and read the manager talking about other things. The important thing is what happens for 90 minutes on the pitch.

“Spain made a good step forward in the last 10 years when the journalists talk about what happens on the pitch.

“One of the big successes in Spain is the people speak more than usual about the game, what happens on the pitch. That’s how I feel more comfortable.

“Sometimes it’s better for my players not to answer.”
