Manchester City have already wrapped up the Premier League this season meaning the remaining four matches that they are scheduled to play will be celebratory games.
City take on West Ham United at the London stadium on Sunday and before the match, English media has been abuzz with the fact that Cityzens goalkeeper Ederson will be the one to take penalties if Guardiola’s men were awarded one.
This report can about after Ederson made a statement earlier this week in which he said that he would be happy to take penalties if his manager wanted him to.
Ederson said: “If Pep (Guardiola) asks me to take it, I’m there. I’d like to score.
“I heard them chanting my name, asking me to take the penalty but Gabriel [Jesus] went there. Unfortunately, he missed it and Bernardo happily scored. But if the manager had asked me to go there, definitely I’d score.”
And this statement was enough for the fans to jump the bandwagon and claim that it was Ederson who would be taking penalties for Man City from now until the end of the season.
Guardiola though was quick to shut down these rumours and the Spanish boss clarified that no such thing is going to happen and they will respect their opposition.
The City boss went onto say that if it was a penalty shoot-out then Ederson might as well take a spot-kick but it would not happen during the course of the game.
While speaking to the media during the pre-match press conference on Friday, Pep Guardiola said: “That is not going to happen because he is a goalkeeper. Respect for the opponents, respect for the competition.
“One situation is a shootout, maybe he can do that but not in a game.”
