Mikel Arteta was appointed as the new Arsenal manager last December and according to Dennis Bergkamp, the former midfielder has a clear vision in mind which he wants to implement at the Emirates.
The relatively new boss has not yet made a huge impact at the club but the players certainly seem to have embodied the vision of their manager and according to Bergkamp, Mikel Arteta will need a few more things before Arsenal can move back to the top of the Premier League once again.
“I watched Arteta’s first game in charge at home (against Chelsea ),” Bergkamp told the Daily Mail.
“In that game, it was clear to see what his intentions were with the team. The front four would chase the ball and put pressure on the opponents, but the midfield stayed behind. There was a big hole.
“I don’t know if you remember the AC Milan of Arrigo Sacchi, with Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. In training, they’d have ropes between them, so the distance between the players was always similar on the pitch.
“That was fantastic in our team as well. There was always a connection. There were no holes. He’s working on it, but it needs time and may be different players.
“Slowly you can see them trying to play a possession game. But it’s a different culture which will take time. You have to put the hours in, like how we did with Arsene.”
Can Mikel Arteta bring success back at the Emirates?
Mikel Arteta has managed to win over his current bunch of players but we feel this upcoming transfer window will be really crucial for the Arsenal boss and his long-term plans.
The manager clearly needs to bring in reinforcements for a number of positions and we doubt if he can manage to acquire all of them in one single window.
Also, many of his big players might look to head out of the club in the summer meaning Mikel Arteta will need a couple of seasons before he can finally shape a first-team squad as per his own imagination.
Till then, Arsenal have no other option but to fight it out for the top-four and hope that at least they can get back their Champions League status soon enough.
