Asmir Begovic Celtic FC

Celtic FC are currently 13 points clear at the top of the table but they have played one more game than Rangers who occupy the second spot.

And to be very realistic it would and possibly be the Bhoys who will be crowned the Scottish Champions for the 2019-20 season despite the fact that the Rangers fans will not like it one bit.

The league is currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic and according to Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, if there’s no probable way of starting the league then the authorities should consider naming Celtic FC the champions.

“If there’s a way this can be finished, we need to not give up on that too soon,” he told BBC Scotland.

“But we’re all realistic enough to know that it’s becoming less and less likely.

“The likelihood is Celtic would go on and win the league so maybe that decision – if we can’t get the league finished – might be easier to deal with, unless you’re a Rangers supporter, and I see a lot of common sense in that.”

And for a short period of time, this seemed to be a real possibility after the Belgian top division chose to end the current season as is thereby crowing Club Brugge as the champions for the current season.

But UEFA clearly were not too happy with this decision and they immediately came out with a statement saying that if a league choose to end the season abruptly then teams from that league might not be playing in the European competitions next season.

“It is of paramount importance that even a disruptive event like this epidemic does not prevent our competitions from being decided on the field, in accordance with their rules and that all sporting titles are awarded on the basis of results,” the joint letter said, as reported.

“We are confident that football can restart in the months to come – with conditions that will be dictated by public authorities – and believe that any decision of abandoning domestic competitions is, at this stage, premature and not justified.

“UEFA reserves the right to assess the entitlement of clubs to be admitted to the 2020/21 UEFA club competitions.

“The Belgian Pro League said it had had “constructive” discussions with UEFA on Friday morning in which it “contested any approach which would force a league to continue in the current health crisis”.”

So clearly the last thing the Scottish FA would want is to infuriate UEFA meaning they have no other option but to wrap up the rest of the matches by any way possible.

While right now things do not look great and the Premiership has been suspended till further notice but the FA does have time till August to finish the remainder of the games meaning Celtic FC will have to earn their championship by winning the required number of matches.
