Chelsea are planning to bring in a number of new players during the summer transfer window but they could suffer a setback in their plans thanks to Real Madrid.

The Blues sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer for a fee of £90 million but that payment was not cleared out in full by the Los Blancos with part of the transfer fee payable this summer.

In most of the big-money transfers, the whole amount is paid in instalments over the course of the player’s contract with the new club and this is why Real Madrid still owe around £40 million to Chelsea.

But according to the Daily Mail, the pandemic situation is set to cause a lot of financial problems to the Spanish clubs meaning Chelsea might not get their payments this year.

The report claims: “Premier League clubs are worried about receiving instalments of transfer fees worth more than £100million and due from European sides because of the collapse of TV deals on the continent.

“Sportsmail has learned that broadcasters in France, Spain and Italy have all failed to make payments to their respective leagues over the last month, leading to fears that clubs in those countries may be unable to pay fees due in June.

“An analysis conducted by Sportsmail shows that Premier League clubs sold players for a combined £851m to counterparts in France, Spain and Italy over the last four years, although a significant proportion of those fees have yet to be paid and could now be in jeopardy.

“There are 54 players with outstanding fees owed to Premier League clubs currently playing in France, Spain and Italy so most of the top flight will be affected if those clubs are unable or unwilling to make payments this summer.”

If this happens then it will be a massive setback to Frank Lampard since the Chelsea boss is expected to make a long list of signings this summer.

The Blues have not made a single signing in the past two transfer windows and with the pandemic crisis set to hit them as well, there is every possibility of a fund shortage at the club. And in such a scenario if they do not get the money due from Real Madrid then Lampard might have to strike off one of his possible signings from his wishlist.
