Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is set to name his new club captain this week and many believed Eden Hazard would be handed the honour.

Hazard’s current contract with the Blues expires in 2020 but the club are yet to tie him down to a new deal. And with each passing month, fear grows that the attacking midfielder will join Real Madrid.

Eden Hazard has easily been the best player in the Premier League this season and Maurizio Sarri was reportedly planning to reward him by offering the captain’s armband.

But now it seems the Blues have scrapped that plan and will instead make Cesar Azpilicueta the new club captain.

Chelsea primarily wanted to make Eden Hazard the captain at the club so that he gets an added responsibility and thinks twice before moving to Real Madrid.

Now though, the Blues have come to the conclusion that the captain’s armband will do nothing to change Eden Hazard’s mind hence they have planned to revert back to their original option.

Cesar Azpilicueta had been wearing the armband on the pitch in absence of Gary Cahill so it makes perfect sense to make him the new captain.

There is also a possibility that Gary Cahill might remain the club captain but reports have emerged the defender is keen on moving out of Stamford Bridge in January – in which case the armband should roll to Azpilicueta.

Eden Hazard right now is nowhere close to leaving Chelsea but as the next transfer window draws closer, fears are growing amongst the Blues fans that the playmaker will not be in London for a long time – especially if he keeps on performing like this.
