Arsenal and Manchester United are both in the hunt for a new centre-forward in January and it looks like both of them have set their sights on Dries Mertens.
Dries Mertens joined Napoli in 2013 and for most of this time, he’s been a pivotal player in the first-team squad but now there have been rumours that he might not sign a new deal.
The 32-year-old will be a free agent during the summer transfer window and right now there are a host of clubs who have shown interest in signing him.
As per some reports, Borussia Dortmund is ready to offer him a new deal while some claim Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs.
But it looks like Napoli are not willing to wait until the end of the season and risk losing him for free with rumours claiming the Serie A outfit will be ready to sell him off for a transfer fee of 10 million pounds during the January window.
And this is where the likes of Man United and Arsenal both come in.
Man United have been linked with Dries Mertens for the past couple of weeks as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to bring in a new centre-forward.
United sold off Romelu Lukaku during the summer but could not bring in a proper replacement. And for a fee of just 10 million pounds, Dries Mertens will be the perfect successor.
Now though during the past couple of days, some reports have claimed that Arsenal have also made enquiries about Dries Mertens as new boss Mikel Arteta lists down his transfer requirements.
It is still unclear whether Dries Mertens would want to move to England and join either of the two interested clubs especially with giants like Bayern Munich interested in him.
Inter Milan too are interested in the 32-year-old meaning he wouldn’t even have to leave Italy during the summer – so that’s also a pretty viable option.
But while Napoli are preparing to sell him off during the January transfer window, at the same time they have offered the player a new contract and are confident that Dries Mertens will put pen to paper.
