The Dutch Eredivisie has chosen to declare the 2019-20 season void and now there are fears that the SPFL could also follow suit.

The season being void means there will be no champions for the current campaign as well as no promotions and if the Scottish body walks in the same path, then Celtic FC could be denied their tile despite occupying the top spot on the league table.

Sky Sports are reporting: “The Dutch Eredivisie season has been ended with immediate effect, meaning league leaders Ajax have been denied the title.

“There will also be no promotion to the Dutch Eredivisie or relegation from the top flight, following an agreement reached over a video conference call between the Dutch FA (KNVB) and clubs.

“Ajax were top of the Eredivisie table, ahead of AZ Alkmaar on goal difference, with nine rounds of matches to play when the season was suspended.

“The Eredivisie have put forward Ajax to go directly to the play-offs of the Champions League, with AZ playing in the second heat of the Champions League. Third-placed Feyenoord go straight into the group stage of the Europa League with PSV and Willem II qualifying for the second qualifying round for the Europa League.

“The settlement of places for European competition next season is subject to confirmation from UEFA.”

While Rangers FC will surely call for the season to be voided so their arch-rivals are denied the championship but some experts believe this might not be the case after all.

Ajax and Alkmaar were separated on goal difference at the top of the table in the Eredivisie but in the SPFL, Celtic FC are enjoying a healthy 13 point lead which could mean they are closer to the title than we might assume.

The Belgian Pro League is another domestic league which has decided to end its current season but unlike the Eredivisie, they chose to name Club Brugge as the champions since they held a 20 point lead at the top of the table.

But despite all these domestic rearrangements, what remains to be seen is how UEFA choose to respond to this as their call could hugely impact Rangers who are still playing in the Europa League this season.
