Chelsea managed to hold onto their fourth spot on the Premier League table as Frank Lampard refused to lay the red carpet for Carlo Ancelotti’s return to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues went into this match at the back of a 2-0 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup and they used the momentum blazingly in their favour – trouncing Everton 4-0.

And speaking after the match, the manager admitted that he was really sceptical about his team’s performance on Sunday especially after the midfield he had selected.

Lampard said, as quoted: “Well, it’s collective isn’t.

“When you pick a midfield like we picked, particularly that area with players that are very forward-thinking – there’s two eights in our team – you do worry about the defensive nature of the game.

“But we were spot on every part of our game, not just the midfield three but the team, the attitude, the focus and, to be honest, we’ve played like that a fair bit at home this year but we haven’t had that last bit which is the unpredictable bit.

“Today we had it but the overall performance was brilliant.”

Did Frank Lampard take a gamble?

Frank Lampard was without the likes of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, with the Italian being suspended and the Frenchman still out injured.

And while Ruben Loftus-Cheek has returned back from his long injury lay-off but is yet to be fully match-fit meaning Lampard had no other option but to name a midfield trio which included two youngsters in the form of Mason Mount and Billy Gilmour.

Thankfully though both these players came out with flying colours with Mason Mount opening the scoring in the 14th minute of the match.

So, in reality, there was little for Frank Lampard to choose from but things will look surely brighter next weekend when Jorginho returns back from his one-match ban and Loftus-Cheek gets some more training under his belt.
