Man United pick up three points vs Villa but have they suffered another defensive injury?

Luke Shaw Man United

Manchester United came from 1-1 to win against Aston Villa at Villa Park but that win might have come at the cost of an injury to Luke Shaw.

McTominay’s 86th-minute winner was enough to secure three vital points for Manchester United but Erik ten Hag took off Shaw during half-time and this substitution immediately suggested an injury.

The manager however has told the press that Luke Shaw was taken off as a precautionary measure so the injury is not serious.

The manager said after the match: “It was a precaution. He mentioned some complaints and we can’t take a risk, especially not with Luke Shaw, because he has had many injuries in the past.

“We took him off so that it did not become an injury. We have to see how it develops in the coming days.

“Everyone knows my philosophy, to have Licha Martinez and Luke Shaw, two left-footed [defenders]. Also, we haven’t had Tyrell Malacia available for the whole season.

“So all the way, all the time, we have to make compromises. And that is not in our advantage. But today we managed it and hopefully it’s not too bad with Luke.”

Shaw joined Man United in 2014 as a young prodigy from Southampton but his career at Old Trafford hasn’t quite taken off due to all the injury woes he’s suffered.

Last season was one of the luckier ones where he managed to remain injury-free, missing only three matches altogether but this campaign, he’s already been out of action for 92 days.

Luke Shaw has missed 16 games from August till November and even though this current injury is not serious, he could be on the sidelines for a game or two.

Tyrell Malacia is still missing so there’s a possibility Ten Hag might have to rely on Victor Lindelof in the left full-back role just like he did during the second half of the Villa game.

Lindelof did not have the best of games but Wan-Bissaka is also missing which means the Man United manager cannot afford to put Dalot out on the left.

Hopefully, Ten Hag had taken off Luke Shaw in time to avoid any major setback but we doubt if the manager will risk the England international against Luton Town next weekend.
