Chelsea return to action next week when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League season opener at the Falmer Stadium.

The Blues did manage to get into the Champions League this season but towards the end of the 2019-20 season, Chelsea lost steam which resulted in them being knocked out of the Champions League and also losing the FA Cup final to Arsenal.

And speaking ahead of the start of the new campaign, Lampard has admitted that a grey patch is inevitable this time around as well this time he and his players will have to identify and overcome it.

“I’m very aware that a club like Chelsea, even though we had a transfer ban, even though the year was difficult, expectations are going to go up hugely,” Lampard told The High Performance Podcast, as reported.

“And I just have to accept that as part of the job, and try and go about my job as well as I can.

“I think you have to be understanding that you’re coming to the messy patch. I think our messy patch probably happened actually back end of the season.

“I think we achieved a lot… because nobody expected us to come in the top four. But we lost a cup final, and then we lost to Bayern Munich.

“And it’s a bitter taste for me, I go away and I have a bad feel about those games.

“So I understand that those issues and problems will come again. It’s just that I, and we as staff, have to double down. We have to work harder.”

Chelsea have splurged a lot of money on new signings this summer so Lampard will be under even more pressure to deliver.

While some pundits and experts hope that Chelsea will be able to compete for the league title but even if they can finish close to that top-two spot of the table, then it will be a job well done from their relatively inexperienced manager.
