Rangers vs Leipzig
Ibrox Stadium Rangers

Rangers FC have been made a superb start to the new season and under Steven Gerrard, the Teddy Bears have made some great progress.

While the manager has brought in a number of new players into the squad during the summer transfer window but it is the senior players who have taken up the responsibility on behalf of the whole team.

Alfredo Morelos has been superb goalscoring form for the club but it is right-back James Tavernier who has been marshalling the defensive unit.

James Tavernier joined Rangers in 2015 and since then the 26-year-old has been the undisputed right-back for the club.

Last season Tavernier scored nine goals in 46 appearances for the club but this campaign the full-back has already racked up eight goals from just 20 games.

And speaking about James Tavernier, former Rangers boss Jimmy Nicholl has revealed why the defender has been performing so brilliantly under the new boss.

Jimmy Nicholl said“it reminds me of a time in my own Rangers career, before a game against Dundee United. The manager Graeme Souness and his assistant Walter Smith told me United had been talking about Rangers’ weakness.

“They were going to target me, get in behind me and exploit what they felt was my weakness in the air. I said ‘is that right?’

“That’s when personal pride comes into it and I remember getting the bit between my teeth and making sure it didn’t happen.

“It’s the same with Tav, I remember pointing out articles to him where people said he was Rangers’ weakness.

“He has to use that as a spur and I think he does. Has he been better defensively this season? Yes. Has he still got a bit to go? Yes. But he can get there.”

Rangers FC are back in the Scottish League Cup this weekend as they take on Aberdeen in the semi-finals on Sunday at Hampden Park.
