Manchester United lost their Champions League game against Juventus 1-0 on Tuesday and with that the pressure in back on the Red Devils to qualify for the knockout stages.

While Juve have one foot into the next round, Man United will now have to battle it out with Valencia for the second spot.

But if Jose Mourinho’s men play anything close to what they did versus the Old Lady on Tuesday, then surely it will be the Spanish side that will move into the knockout stages.

Man United were totally outplayed by Max Allegri’s side with the likes of Pogba and Nemanja Matic chasing shadows during the first half. While their performances did get better in the second half but they never really made any dent on Juventus’ defence.

But one of the more shocking things was that Jose Mourinho did not make a single substitution during the full 90 minutes.

This move from the manager raised a number of eyebrows but now the Portuguese has finally revealed why he did not make any changes to his playing XI on Tuesday.

“Well, you have to bear in mind that Alexis Sanchez was in the stands, Jesse Lingard was in the stands,” Mourinho told reporters.

Fellaini may or may not have been in the stands – he might have been at home I didn’t see him. And the only really attacking options I had on the bench was a young 18-year-old lad who has never played in the first team before.

“And I didn’t think, given the dynamic of the game, it would have been appropriate to put him on.

“You can’t expect a young kid coming on, making his debut in a game like that, to be able to give me something like scoring a goal.

“So, basically, that’s why I didn’t make any changes and just stuck with the players we had out on the pitch.”

Manchester United get back into Premier League action this weekend when they on Everton at home.
