Chelsea suffered a 4-1 loss to Liverpool in midweek and on Sunday, they have gone on to lose 2-4 to Wolves, at home. And these two losses have put Mauricio Pochettino under the scanner.
The loss to Liverpool was somewhat acceptable given that the Anfield outfit are the current league leader, and the Blues are in a rebuilding phase. However, the embarrassing defeat to Wolves has now become a major talking point.
This is Chelsea’s 10th Premier League loss of the current season and they have now been pushed to the 11th position on the table with 31 points from a possible 69.
Top-level European football for the next season has become a distant dream for Chelsea and after the loss on Sunday, Pochettino’s job is under major scrutiny.
Mauricio Pochettino took charge of Chelsea last summer and the club’s new owners backed him with a plethora of big-money signings. Unlike Abramovich, Todd Boehly has been very patient with the new manager but after a string of poor results, the rumour mill is already ripe that Poch will be shown the door very soon.
Chelsea are currently winless in their last three matches across all competitions, and the situation could worsen as they are set to face Villa, Man City, Liverpool, and Spurs by the end of this month. Given Chelsea’s performance this season, it’s challenging to imagine them securing a victory in any of these upcoming matches.
We doubt if Boehly will be backing Mauricio Pochettino any further and it won’t be a surprise if the Argentine is sacked sometime next week.
Several names are being associated with the Chelsea job but one of the favourites to land the job is Jose Mourinho. Jose has parted ways with AS Roma and while he’s being associated with a job in the Saudi league, a move back to the Bridge will be very tempting for the Portuguese.
Mourinho won his last EPL title with Chelsea back in the 2014-2015 season and he would love to return to England and regain his throne.
The other people who are being tipped to replace Mauricio Pochettino are men like Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Frank and Zinedine Zidane. Xavi has also been mentioned but he is unlikely to leave Barcelona during the middle of the season.
Chelsea have spent in excess of £1 million across the last three transfer windows but the performances on the pitch have been very mediocre. There had been some rumours that the Blues are planning to let go of Mauricio Pochettino at the end of this season but after the losses to Liverpool and now Wolves, this decision could be fast-tracked.
