Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa
Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard

It’s been two years since Steven Gerrard was named the manager at Rangers FC but still, the club’s not even close to challenging Celtic for the Premiership title.

Last season, Celtic picked up the SPFL trophy with comfortable ease and we are about to see a repeat of the same in the 2019-20 season.

While most people are quite content with the work that Gerrard has done at the club but according to BT Sport pundit Stephen Craigan, the former Liverpool man has been sleeping on a bed of roses at Rangers.

Craigan told The Scottish Sun: “In the week when all eyes were focused on Rangers and the SPFL, what slipped past relatively quietly was manager Steven Gerrard celebrating his second anniversary in charge at Ibrox.

“The two full-time incumbents before Gerrard, Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha, also failed to deliver a major trophy and were shown the door.“So, why is Gerrard being treated differently?

“On the pitch, it’s fair to say Gerrard’s Rangers have shown more potential than previous sides with his two European campaigns, in particular, bringing a lot of satisfaction to the supporters. They’ve had some terrific performances and results against top teams, but long-term that alone won’t be enough to pacify the success-starved fans.

“There’s no doubt the lack of a trophy is the stand-out failure and it will be eating away at Gerrard. So, what does the future hold?“Gerrard will be aware that if he can’t get the trophy cabinet stocked up again then a third anniversary will be unlikely.

“At Ibrox, winning is a necessity. The fans must hope that during this time their manager will be plotting the road back to success. Let’s wait and see if that is the case.”

Is Steven Gerrard getting an unfair advantage at Rangers?

If any other manager would have failed to pick up a silverware at Rangers for two years surely he would have been shown the door by now. But we feel the stature of Steven Gerrard is forcing the Ibrox management to await a bit longer.

Gerrard has clearly convinced the board that a major rebuilding process will take time and right now the senior officials are ready to let the former England international work at his own pace.

But having said that, the pressure is surely mounting on Steven Gerrard and if he cannot deliver a silverware by the end of the 2020-21 season, surely even the fans will start raising their voices.

This though can be stopped if the Gers can manage to turn their current Europa League campaign into a success.
