Man City lost their last Premier League encounter to Liverpool 3-1 meaning they have now fallen nine points behind the league leaders and to make things worse, both Chelsea and Leicester City have moved above them.

Man City are currently fourth on the league table with 25 points and after the loss at Anfield, most people have come to the conclusion that Liverpool have opened up a considerable gap at the top of the table and will most certainly pick up their maiden Premier League title next May.

According to Ilkay Gundogan though, they were in a similar position last season too but managed to close the gap and eventually win the title.

And the former Bundesliga star believes they can achieve the same feat this season and defend their crown come May of next year.

“We have to accept it, but there is a long way to go. Last season in January we were quite far behind and were able to turn it around,” he said[as quoted].

“But we are not independent any more – we have to see how our competitors do, especially Liverpool, and that makes the situation more uncomfortable.

“We have to keep trying to play well and amass as many points as possible.

“I don’t feel the title has already gone, and I don’t think the Liverpool players will feel like that, because we are all professionals.

“We all try to do our best on the pitch but sometimes it doesn’t work out – we are human beings.

“It’s an interesting competition and will be a great season for the spectators.

“We want to put pressure on ourselves and if we can reach our level in every game the results will come automatically.”

Last year it was basically a two-horse race between Man City and Liverpool but this season both Leicester and Chelsea are amongst the mix.

This means not only will Man City have to pull up their sleeves and fight for each and every win but Liverpool too have to be on their toes in order to maintain that hefty lead which they have now gathered.
