UCL Champions League final UEFA Champions League

The Premier League has been touted by many as the most competitive league in the world but most often than not it has been proved otherwise when English teams fail to live up to the expectations.

The last English club to win the Champions League was Chelsea was back in 2012 and since then it has mostly been Spanish team who have dominated the competition.

Despite that, a large section of the media pins their hopes on English teams every season and for the past couple of years, the bet has been on Manchester City.

Managed by Pep Guardiola, the Citizens had been one of the more favourite teams to lift the trophy last season but failed to do so. And this year too they have started the campaign with a 2-1 loss to Lyon.

While the quality of the teams are debatable but there’s no denying that most of the English fans are much more polished than some of their European counterparts.

And we saw an example of that when a travelling Lyon after using a Nazi salute during the Manchester City vs Lyon game this weekend.

A video was released on social media which shows an away fan performing a Nazi salute. And immediately this was the centre of debate.

The Greater Manchester Police did not take this incident lightly and have started an investigation to find the culprit.

“This is absolutely abhorrent behaviour and it has no place in our community and no place in sport,” Greater Manchester Police chief inspector Gareth Parkin said in a statement.

“We are committed to policing racism at football matches, and hate crimes of any sort will simply not be tolerated.

“We will be working closely with French police and both clubs to identify the person responsible.”

Even Lyon were swift to get into the act as they released an official statement where they have vowed to ban the individual who performed the Nazi salute from future Lyon games.

Lyon’s statement read: “Olympique Lyonnais has seen a video that circulates on social networks. The supporter in question is being identified by the services of Olympique Lyonnais.

“As soon as he is identified, he will be excluded for life at Groupama Stadium and travel for club matches.”
