Liverpool and Spurs are the two Premier League clubs in the Champions League semi-finals but both of them had to take really different paths to get to their eventual destination.
While Liverpool cruised past Porto in the quarterfinals, Spurs, on the other hand, had to sweat it out to overcome Manchester City in the same round.
But oddly enough, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri feels that Chelsea’s run in the Carabao Cup was better than both Liverpool and Spurs’ run in the Champions League.
Chelsea took on City in the final of the league cup eventually losing to Guardiola’s men on penalties and Sarri feels reaching this final was really tough.
“The Premier League is really very difficult, for getting in the final of the League Cup we had to play against Liverpool, against Tottenham, the final against Manchester City,” said Maurizio Sarri(as reported).
“It was easier to get to the final of the Champions League.
“I think many give to the Champions League too much importance.
“Of course it is the most important competition for clubs but it is a competition with straight elimination so sometimes you need a post in or a post out to qualify or to be eliminated.
“It’s clear it’s the most important competition for clubs in Europe, and as a consequence in the world, but it’s a competition in which you need to be lucky.”
Chelsea themselves are still fighting in Europe and they are scheduled to take on Eintracht in the semi-finals of the Europa League, the first leg of which will be played at the Commerzbank Arena.
The Blues are still fighting to get back into the Champions League next season and winning the Europa League will ensure that they directly qualify for the top tier of European football next campaign.
