Blackburn Rovers played a friendly against Rangers FC this weekend and immediately after the game, Tony Mowbray had a word of warning for Celtic.

The friendly ended with a scoreline of 1-1 and despite a few lapses of concentration, the Gers were pretty solid overall.

And speaking after the match, Rovers boss Mowbray has predicted that the Steven Gerrard managed side will be a force to reckon with during the upcoming season.

“In the first half especially they had good possession of the ball,” Mowbray said.

“They are a very well-coached team, so for us, it was the perfect game.

“You can see already what Stevie has done. He is putting together a team which has an identity, I would suggest.

“I can say hand on heart I have never watched a moment of Rangers play this season but we played Liverpool this time last season and they play the same 4-3-3 formation.

“They press high from the front, they drop their midfielders deep and try and overload you.

“They suck you on top of them then play through.

“As I said they are a well-coached team and you can see they are going to be a force this season.”

Celtic pretty much ran away with the Premiership trophy last season as the Gers finished nine points behind their Glasgow rivals in second spot.

But most pundits have predicted that Gerrard is in the process of building a formidable side which can seriously challenge Celtic and their monopoly in Scottish competitions.

Gerrard managed to identify his squad’s weak points last season and this summer he is focusing on plugging those holes. And now even Mowbray believes that the Liverpool legend is doing a fine job in trying to overtake Celtic.
