Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Aston Villa in their second game of the 21/22 Premier League season but now they must quickly dust themselves up and prepare for the Carabao Cup.
The Magpies have a tough second-round league cup game in midweek when they take on Burnley at St James’s Park.
Newcastle United are yet to pick up a win this season, first losing to West Ham and then to Villa this past weekend. And if they are not careful on Wednesday then they could very well make an early exit from the tournament.
Steve Bruce is expected to make a lot of changes to this starting XI which took the field against Villa and this could be a real stretch since the manager is missing some key players due to injuries.
Newcastle United’s team news vs Burnley:
The manager is expected to change the formation to a 3-4-3 meaning Lascelles and Fabian Schar are going to keep their place in the line-up while Ciaran Clark is likely to come into defence.
Isaac Hayden picked up a knee injury against Aston Villa and is ruled out of the Burnley game. Jonjo Shelvey is another player who is on the sidelines with an injury so the club have hinted that Jeff Hendrick could be in line to start alongside Sean Longstaff.
The statement on the club’s official website said: “Isaac Hayden, who was forced off at half time at Aston Villa on Saturday with a knee injury, did not train on Monday and neither did Jonjo Shelvey, so Jeff Hendrick could come into contention to face his former club while Matty and Sean Longstaff are also battling for a central midfield berth.”
Joe Willock will be rested in midweek while Almiron is also going to remain on the bench. This means Jamal Lewis will come into the left-hand side of midfield.
Joelinton came off the bench against Aston Villa but he is going to get a start against Burnley and even Dwight Gayle should come into attack.
